Abstract

Shoulder pain and/or limited range of motion caused by the myofascial trigger points in the muscles acting on the shoulder are very common. At times, pain originating at the shoulder may referred as distally as to the hand. Thus it is frequently misdiagnosed as frozen shoulder, bursitis, impingement syndrome, cervical radiculopathy, or thoracic outlet syndrome. Pain drawing is the most important first step to approach patients who suffer pain from trigger points. Such drawings provide much information about the pain experienced and aid in the diagnosis of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Trigger point injection and stretching exercise are specific treatment for MPS. If one is well aware of the presence and treatment of MPS, effective management of shoulder pain may be feasible.
